2018 Electrical Meter Anomaly
The story behind how analyzing the solar generation and electricity consumption of my home inspired me to transform the Town of Eliot Electricity data (Excel spreadsheet) and turn it into a Data Model with Dashboard. {SHORT TITLE = “Where my Data Analyst journey began”}
In 2017-2018, Central Maine Power changed its billing system & converted residential electricity meters to wireless units. Consumers across the state, including myself, began noticing significant increases in charges.
This is a composite visualization I developed in early 2018 of the electricity consumed and produced at my home. With the benefit of the increased literacy in visualizing data I have accumulated from my course of study in the past years, it make me cringe. It’s a great demonstration of Tufte’s “Chart Junk” though.
When I shared it with others, I had to spend a lot of time explaining it. The data was definitely not telling the story with this visualization. This visualization should more accurately be described as a digital white-board of the insights I developed in wrangling the data.
Below is the full series of visualizations I developed to try and explain the story (including the confounding variables of upgrades to my house during this period)
